PlusZero Expands Hydrogen Application at Port of Leith
October 2025
PlusZero Power is proud to continue its collaboration with Waterwhelm, Forth Ports, Logan Energy, and Targe Towing Limited as part of the newly funded Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 6 (CMDC6) project at the Port of Leith, Edinburgh.
Building on the success of the 12-month CMDC4 project, which showcased the world’s first green hydrogen shore power demonstrator, CMDC6 will advance the next stage of hydrogen deployment within UK ports by expanding shore power capability to include the refuelling of hydrogen-powered vessels.
The original CMDC4 project demonstrated how clean, green hydrogen could replace diesel generators and reduce emissions from vessels while berthed in port. Through CMDC6, the consortium will further develop this integrated hydrogen ecosystem to support wider maritime decarbonisation across the UK.
As part of the project, PlusZero Power will deploy a new combined heat and power (CHP) version of its Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) technology. In a world-first application, waste heat generated from the HICE system will be captured and reused by Waterwhelm’s advanced water treatment technology to process wastewater from a nearby treatment works into freshwater for sustainable hydrogen production.
The CMDC6 project aims to demonstrate how to:
Eliminate carbon emissions from diesel generators
Reduce demand on local water networks
Lower hydrogen and e-fuels cost through colocation of electrolytic hydrogen and e-methanol production with waste water treatment plants
Support the development of hydrogen regulation and compliance frameworks
At PlusZero, we remain focused on delivering practical, commercially viable hydrogen solutions for sectors where decarbonisation is urgent and reliable off-grid power is essential.
CMDC6 represents another important step in demonstrating how integrated hydrogen systems can deliver immediate emissions reductions while supporting the long-term transition to zero-carbon ports and maritime operations.
