PlusZero Powers World First Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstration at Port of Leith

13 March 2025

PlusZero is proud to have supported the world’s first Green Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstrator at the Port of Leith, delivered in collaboration with Forth Ports, Targe Towing, Logan Energy and Waterwhelm.

The project was funded by the UK Department for Transport’s (DfT) Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition round 4 (CMDC4) and aimed to showcase how hydrogen can be deployed in real port environments to replace diesel shore power systems and reduce emissions from vessels while berthed.

In this demonstration project, hydrogen was produced on-site via electrolysis, compressed and then stored to provide fuel for a PlusZero Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) generator. This generator was then used to provide clean shore power for Targe Towing’s Tug Boats operating at the Port of Leith, which would otherwise be using a diesel generator. Project Partner Waterwhelm’s forward osmosis water purification technology produced the water for the electrolyser using final effluent from a neighbouring waste water treatment plant.

The port is project demonstrates PlusZero’s Hydrogen Power as a Service model in action, linking decentralised hydrogen production directly to real-world demand, improving system efficiency, and enabling immediate emissions reduction.

Projects like this highlight the scalability of hydrogen in port environments and its potential to replace diesel across critical infrastructure.

As the hydrogen economy develops, PlusZero remains focused on deploying commercially viable, repeatable systems that deliver clean power today.
