PlusZero Wins Scottish Government Grant To Support Its Edinburgh Festivals Hydrogen Clean Power Project

The pioneering work being carried out by clean power start-up PlusZero and its partners has been given a significant boost with the award of a £77,000 Scottish Government grant which will support the delivery of a series of clean power demonstrations during Edinburgh’s 2021 cultural events programme.

PlusZero will power a series of performances at the Edinburgh International Festival in August using its green hydrogen zero-carbon generator, creating ‘net zero moments’ for the first time in Scotland’s outdoor entertainment industry.

Launched in 2020 with the aim of decarbonising the events sector, PlusZero will demonstrate the clean power potential of its pioneering green hydrogen zero-carbon generator throughout the summer and autumn of 2021, culminating at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay on 31 December.

The government-backed project aims to demonstrate that green hydrogen based clean power technology offers a viable alternative to the carbon emitting and polluting diesel generators the outdoor events sector currently relies on. The project includes research by Edinburgh University School of Geosciences into the perceptions and attitudes of the public, audiences, performers and event operators towards the use of novel green hydrogen based technology to power city centre outdoor events.

The green hydrogen used for the demonstrations will be sourced from the Western Isles and Orkney.  Working with a number of expert partners, PlusZero will maximise learnings from the government-backed project ahead of the launch of PlusZero’s clean power commercial service in 2022.
